The basics

How online STD testing works

The same four steps apply whether you visit a lab or test at home.

  1. Choose a test and order online

Pick a full panel or a single test on the service’s website and pay online. Most services don’t ask for a phone call or an intake interview.

  2. Give a sample

Visit a nearby lab for a quick blood or urine sample, or collect a finger-prick, urine or swab sample at home and mail it back.

  3. Get results online

Results post to a private online account, usually 1 to 3 days after a lab visit, or a few days after the lab receives a mailed kit.

  4. Talk to a clinician if needed

If a result is positive, the services we compare offer a consultation with a physician, free with some and for a fee with others.

Two ways to test

Lab visit or at-home kit?

Both use the same kinds of lab tests. The difference is how the sample gets to the lab.

Order online, visit a lab

You pay online, then go to a nearby lab to give a blood or urine sample.

  • Most visits take a few minutes and need no appointment
  • Trained staff collect the sample
  • Results usually post 1 to 3 days after the visit
  • You need to get to a lab during its opening hours

At-home kit

A kit is mailed to you. You collect the sample yourself and mail it back to the lab.

  • No trip: a finger-prick blood sample, urine or a swab
  • Kits ship in plain packaging
  • Some kits can be paid for with HSA or FSA funds
  • Shipping both ways adds several days before results

What you’re testing for

What a test panel usually covers

A panel tests for several infections from one visit or kit, and costs less than ordering each test separately. Panels differ by service: the ones we compare include 5–10 tests, so check what’s included before you buy.

InfectionUsual sampleGood to know
ChlamydiaUrine or swabOne of the most commonly reported infections in the US; often has no symptoms.
GonorrheaUrine or swabUsually tested together with chlamydia from the same sample.
SyphilisBloodIncluded in most full panels.
HIVBloodIncluded in most full panels, but not every at-home kit. Check before you buy.
Hepatitis B and CBloodOften included in larger lab panels.
TrichomoniasisUrine or swabA common, curable infection, included in some panels.
Herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2)BloodThe CDC doesn’t recommend herpes blood tests for people without symptoms.

Guidelines

When the CDC recommends testing

The CDC recommends regular testing for many people, including those without symptoms.

Timing matters. Some infections take time to show up on a test, so testing very soon after an exposure can miss one. If you have symptoms, see a clinician rather than waiting on an online test.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does an online STD test cost?

Among the services we compare, the largest standard panels have list prices from $139–$379. Single tests, such as an HIV test alone, cost less. Prices change often, so confirm on the service’s site before you order.

How long do results take?

After a lab visit, results usually post in 1 to 3 days. At-home kits usually take 2 to 5 days after the lab receives the sample, plus the time it takes to mail it back.

Will an online STD test show up on my insurance?

Most online testing services don’t bill health insurance, so nothing is sent to your insurer. Some at-home kits can be paid for with HSA or FSA funds.

Are online STD tests accurate?

The services we compare say they use FDA-approved or FDA-cleared tests, processed in CLIA-certified labs: the same kind of labs many doctors’ offices send samples to. Testing too soon after an exposure can miss an infection, so timing matters.

Is a lab visit or an at-home kit better?

Neither is better for everyone. A lab visit takes a few minutes and usually gets results faster, and trained staff collect the sample. A kit skips the trip, but mailing the sample adds several days.

How soon after an exposure should I get tested?

It depends on the infection. Some show up on a test within a week or two; others can take longer. A clinician can help you choose the right time to test.

What happens if a result is positive?

Talk to a clinician about next steps. Each service handles this differently:

  • Everlywell: Free physician consult on abnormal results; prescription at no extra cost.
  • HealthLabs.com: Doctor consult and prescription for about $95, as quoted by HealthLabs.com.
  • LetsGetChecked: Consultation costs $39; medication costs extra.
  • myLAB Box: Free consult with a physician, who may prescribe treatment.
  • Priority STD Testing: Physician consult costs $65; treatment can be prescribed.
  • STDcheck: Doctor consult and written prescription for $95 together; a partner’s prescription is another $95.
Does this site sell tests or see my results?

No. Best STD Tests is an independent publisher. We don’t sell tests, process samples or see anyone’s results, and we never ask about your health.
